Diabetes in Children

Many people think that diabetes is a disease occurring in old age as a result of bad lifestyle. But it’s a mere myth. Diabetes has shown epidemic incidences in children across the globe. It has broken all the age limits and surprisingly exponential rate is being observed.

Type 1 Diabetes In Children

There are two types of diabetes in children – Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. In type 1 diabetes mellitus, the child usually suffers from high blood sugar levels from his childhood. The reason is the complete absence of secretion of insulin in the body and thus, the child requires insulin from outside which is given in the form of insulin shots.

Type 2 Diabetes In Children

The type 2 Diabetes mellitus is observed in children who had normal insulin secretion but they developed insulin resistance of the tissues. The blood sugar levels cannot be lowered down because insulin secreted won’t work in the body. There can be many reasons of the increased incidence of the type 2 diabetes mellitus which is more acquired form of diabetes. Firstly, the reason is the genes. Children who are born chubby and flabby have a tendency to develop diabetes as they are overweight by birth.

Cause of Diabetes In Children

The root cause for diabetes in children is parenting. If a child is fed with high fat and high carbohydrate diets which have a high glycemic index this will add to the chances of diabetes development in the child. Parents tend to let their children eat high fat dishes, ice-creams, candies, puddings and many more delicious foods because they themselves eat them. In addition, many parents are not aware of the amount of calories a child need, this lead to general overfeeding and obesity in children.

Symptoms of diabetes in children are almost same as in adults except children may get more injuries and it gets difficult to control bleeding wounds in children while they play and run around. Diet and awareness about your heredity is the only way to keep your children away from this threat hovering over childhood.
